Prototype Information: Grumman J2F-6 Duck Amphibious Biplane Designed as a utility plane for the US Navy the Duck first flew in 1933. Production of the J2F-6 began in 1943 and featured improved aerodynamics and was suitable for use in many roles: target tug, reconnaissance, anti-sub patrol, and, perhaps best known, as a search and rescue aircraft.

The Arado Ar 196 was the most successful seaplane used by the German Air Force and Navy during the Second World War; it was the standard shipborne catapult seaplane of the German Navy, and was widely operated from coastal bases. The primary duty of the Arado 196 was coastal reconnaissance and patrol although as the war progressed, it was employed in the anti-submarine and convoy escort roles and even for attacking the Whitleys of R.A.F.

The KC-97G, because of its large airframe, made an excellent in-flight tanker. However, as a new series of jet fighters began emerging into service with much faster speeds, the KC-97G was no longer able to perform refueling procedures. Some maintenance officers at the 126th air refueling squadron proposed to fit the KC-97G with GE J-47 jet engines to add to their propulsion power, which proved to be an excellent recommendation.

The B-17 Flying Fortress ''Memphis Belle'' was the most famous bomber, because she was the first heavy bomber in Hitler's European war theater to complete 25 combat missions and keep her entire crew alive. The Memphis Belle was named for pilot Capt. Robert K. Morgan's wartime sweetheart, Ms. Margaret Polk.
